Travel - Washington D.C.

Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

This summer, I have seen a lot of my friends and/or their kids traveling to Washington D.C.  There is so much of our nation's young history in that part of the country, and I think no matter how many times you go, it's impossible to see everything.  Over the course of my life, I have had the opportunity to go several times.  Sometimes I have seen things I recall from previous visits, but there is always something new.  The first time we went was 1976.  It was the year of the United States' Bicentennial, and probably the highlight of that trip was that I was able to meet the Speaker of the House, Carl Albert, who was a personal friend of my dad's, in his office in the House of Representatives.  My whole family was there, and we have a picture somewhere -- it is hi-lar-i-ous.  There we are with the man who is second in line if something were to happen to the President, and we have on our full red, white and blue regalia.  Not to mention that I am barely a teenager, which means I was probably at the most awkward-looking phase of my life.  Yeah, cool.

Since that first visit, so many museums and memorials have been added, I am still always eager to go and see what's new.  Visiting Arlington National Cemetery and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is one stop that I believe I have made on every trip there.  My recollections of being there during 105 degree heat, during a light rain, during pouring rain -- they all remain vivid to me.  There are many details that are very unique to the soldiers who guard the tomb representing the servicemen and women who died in combat but whose remains are unable to be identified.  The tomb is guarded by the Army's Third United States Infantry Regiment.

-Guards guard the tomb every hour of every day, and they have done so since 1937.
-Prior to 1937, the tomb was only guarded during daylight hours.
-During spring and summer, the guard is changed every thirty minutes.
-During the fall and winter, the guard is changed every hour.
-During the evening when the cemetery is closed, the guard is changed every two hours.
-The sentinel marches 21 steps on the black mat, passing the final resting places of the Unknown Soldiers of World War I, II, Korea, and the crypt of the Unknown Soldier of the Vietnam War.
-He stops, turns 90 degrees, waits 21 seconds, continues his turn, waits another 21 seconds, he then returns to the other end to repeat the process.
-21 is a number of special significance.  I can't find anything but speculation as to its meaning.
-The rifle on his outside shoulder signifies that he stands between the tomb and any threat.
-His gloves are moistened so as to keep a firm grip on the rifle.
There are several fallacies about the personal life of the guards during their training and the rules that they agree to follow for the rest of their lives.  Contrary to some beliefs, guards are not prohibited from cursing or drinking alcohol for the remainder of their life.  They are not prevented from speaking to anyone for six months during their rigorous training.  They are allowed to live on or off base, and they may watch television -- all details that have been incorrectly reported.  However, there are several hours a day of rifle and uniform preparation, marching practice and perfection, and learning the history of the tomb and Arlington National Cemetery so that they are completely well versed in this honorable appointment.  The training and history proficiency that is required takes such a great amount of time, they have little left for other activities.

Another interesting fact, is that the crypt holding the remains of the Unknown Soldier from the Vietnam War is now empty.  Due to DNA testing, that soldier was able to be identified in 1998.  He was disinterred, and the remains were returned to his family.

I feel very lucky to have been born in the greatest country in the world.  No matter what difficult situations we face, I am convinced that I would not want to be anywhere else.  I mean, I want to be an American citizen.  But yes, please -- I want to travel.  It helps remind me how wonderful the United States really is.

My Sister

My Baby Princess Sister

She has always been the quieter of the three of us.  I think she hides her brilliant intelligence that way.  There are no goofy pictures of her.  Hmmmm......

Exhibit A -
Right.  Notice who is in the background.  Not participating in the revelry.  No beverage in hand.  Just observing.  I think she even went to bed early that night....

Exhibit B -
Oh, yeah.  There she is again.  Just hanging out.  Not causing any trouble.  Not acting silly.  Not spending money.  Looking pretty.  Clearly, she is much younger than me.

Exhibit C -
Okay, still looking good, but this is where it starts to get a bit more tricky.  Her husband is one of the funniest people I know.  When it comes to telling a story, he can make a bedtime tale sound like a Nobel Peace Prize winning novel.

Exhibit D - as in Dad
Yes, the Baby Princess and our dad, -- our mom is totally photobombing this pic.

Exhibit E - as in "the End"
Look closely and you can see my dad photobombing the lovely pic of the girls.  Just a quick look into my family.  Average in every way.  :)

My Brother

Normal For Us

Surely, we are the same as any other nuclear family.  We think we are hilarious at times.  We think no one acts as silly as we do.  We think we face unusual challenges.  We pull on our pants one leg at a time, just like everyone else.

But then, there is the evidence.
Exhibit A -
This is my brother, and his now 16-year-old son.  They were in the photo booth at the G & L wedding held here last summer.  I don't know if this picture was right before or right after they had everyone in stitches by doing an impromptu dance number which involved an imaginary fishing rod and reel.  I am afraid there is no video, but it was right up there with some of the funniest things I have ever seen.

Exhibit B -
Here we are on a gondola in Venice.  Apparently, you are supposed to kiss as you pass under bridges.  Theoretically, I don't believe you are to kiss your brother-in-law, but these two couldn't resist setting this picture up.  Even though they are sitting about five feet apart, they thought they were so comical.

Exhibit C -
How many of you can say that your mom rode a camel in Egypt at the Great Pyramid of Giza?  This wasn't 30 years ago.  This was in celebration of her and my dad's 50th wedding anniversary two years ago.  Crazy.  FYI - I didn't get on one.

Exhibit D -
No disrespect to the locals is meant here.  This was Dad's souvenir from his camel ride.  We all had them.  Pretty sure he hasn't worn it since.   Check out the lovely motor coach.  Their buses were nicer than most buses I see here.  And the air conditioning was a welcome relief after exploring the pyramids in the sweltering summer heat.

Exhibit E -
My brother is the original photobomber.  I could fill an entire album with pictures with which he has interfered.  Yep, that's him.

Exhibit F -
I don't live with them, but I get the impression that his family is constantly in this state of hysteria.  Most of the time that I am with them, this is not at all an unusual scene.  This was at our house last Christmas.
I love him and his family!

Monday Sing-A-Long

A few You Tube posts caught my eye on Facebook last week.  You may have seen these same ones, but if you didn't click on them and watch them, you should now.  They are watch-worthy.  Don't worry if your screen says something like "these plug-ins are vulnerable" - just click, then if prompted, click "Activate."  I have a safety scan program on this website to keep us all protected from dangerous stuff and malware.  And once you have clicked the "go" on the videos, in the lower right corner, click on the four corners that look like a box to expand it on your screen.  You can easily press the ESC button to return to regular size.
That last one, the Bruno Mars medley, I just liked it.  He has such great songs.  They make me happy.  And it is Monday, I needed a reason to be happy!

July, It's Just Hot

It's July.  It's hot.  I find myself slightly unmotivated to deal with all the things on my to do list.  There's the closet -- always needs attention.  Seems kind of overwhelming, so I move to the desk.  After dealing with what is most pressing, I check my phone.  My kids were harassing me the other day because I had over 1200 messages in my main mailbox on the phone.  I explained that this was just duplicating the ones at home, and it is helpful when I am not AT home.  Besides, I figured out that they automatically delete themselves after about 30 days, so why should I spend time going through that process when it will do it for me eventually.  That little red 1,286 down at the bottom of my screen doesn't bother me.

Seriously, I have to get to my desk today.  Definitely have some deadlines looming.

However, I couldn't help but mention this whole "Sharknado" frenzy.  Did you hear about it?  Or better, did you happen to see it?  I was actually sitting on the couch for the first time in -- okay, since Sunday when I watched Wimbledon -- but flipping through the channels, I saw this "Sharknado" thing on the SyFy channel.  I kind of rolled my eyes, and thought to myself, "surely that isn't a mix between sharks and a tornado."  Kept flipping, and never did find anything to watch.  So yesterday morning, it is all over the news.  Sharknado -- worst movie of all time.  Sharknado -- they spent hundreds of dollars on it, and it looks like five dollars.  Sharknado -- yes, it's exactly what it sounds like.  And I'll be darned if it wasn't about sharks in a tornado that destroys Los Angeles.  Craziest media circus surrounded this deal, ever -- and I couldn't keep up with the puns.  They are running it again, an encore, next week.  Oh.  My.  I am completely content to laugh as I read what others write about it.  I absolutely do not need to see it.

I am working on some cool You Tube videos for tomorrow.  My goodness, there is some unbelievable talent in this world!

Updating

I was doing a little updating to my "About Me" page and to the Facebook, Pinterest and Instagram links yesterday.  You'll have to go check those out if you want to see what new information I have decided to share.  Like the layers of an onion...

Last week, Chevy officially announced the 2014 Stingray Corvette.  Oooooohhhhh..... very nice.  Over my years as a driver, I have seen many reinventions of this car, but this one is really cool.  Yes, I can drive a standard.  My dad made sure of it.  I had a CJ-5 Jeep in high school, and he made me take my driving test in it.  I just knew I needed to drive the big family van, with air conditioning and all, but it didn't happen.  I also had to check my own oil, tire pressure, etc.  Wow, it's nice to be a grown up.
Probably not going to be seeing one of these in my neighborhood this year.  It's a Maserati Ghibli.  I would bet that you couldn't even get one of these worked on within a 500 mile radius of my home.  Never been up close with one of these big boys, and I wonder what all the fuss is about.
Oh, look here!  A "practical Lamborghini" -- whaaaaa?????  I guess since they put four doors on it, that makes it family friendly.  And practical.  Available in 2017.
Here before you know it.
You can't talk about sweet cars without mentioning Porsche.  I kind of like their SUV, but again, my remote location keeps me grounded.  This little baby has an over 600 hp engine.  Unbelievable.  Who really needs that?  But it's cute.  Not the price-of-a-house cute, but I would drive it.  Also available in 2017.  Plenty of time to start saving!
Since I do love cars, I noticed a picture of a black velvet covered Ferrari on my Facebook Lily page. Yes, ridiculous, but quite a sight, nonetheless.  Then, while reading the news, I saw an article that the new Pope was encouraging Catholics to "choose a more humble car" for their mode of transportation.  The article is here.  Makes sense, and I felt like I had been extravagant in my suggestion that this black Ferrari was kind of cool.  Not that I was going to go shopping for a black velvet car of any kind, but more like I felt guilty for even commenting on it.  Point being -- just because something comes out of my mouth doesn't mean I have carefully considered every word and its effect.  This blog is just a place where thoughts fly off the top of my head most usually.  And the cars were kinda fun.  I will definitely revisit this subject.  Vroooommmmmm..............
